As a fitness girlie, I’m always on the lookout for high-quality activewear to add to my workout wardrobe that can take me from the gym to a casual brunch or coffee date. Traveling to Oaxaca: A Guide to Food, Fun, and Instagram-Worthy Spots

If you’re looking for a new travel destination that’s off the beaten path, Oaxaca, Mexico should be at the top of your list. This city is known for its rich culture, colorful markets, and delicious cuisine. And let’s not forget about the gorgeous scenery and those Insta-worthy photo spots!

Traveling to Oaxaca

We had a direct fight from Tijuana, Mexico to Oaxaca, Mexico. It’s extremely easy to catch a flight out of Tijuana using CBX (Cross Border Express), a pedestrian bridge connecting San Diego, California to Tijuana International Airport in Mexico. One of the main advantages of using the CBX is the cost savings. Flights out of Tijuana are often less expensive than those out of the US. Additionally, The Tijuana airport has better flight options, and it is a hub for many airlines that operate in Mexico and Latin America. This means that you have more choices when it comes to flight schedules, connections, and destinations. The cost to use CBX varies but peak prices are $25 per person each way and less during the off season.

When you arrive in Oaxaca, you can easily grab a shuttle from the airport to your hotel for about $7 per person.

Where to Stay

If you are looking for a place to stay in Oaxaca, there are many options to choose from, but two highly recommended hotels are Casa Rosamate and Los Amantes Hotel.

Casa Rosamate is the ‘other’ PINK boutique in Oaxaca, Mexico. It offers a unique blend of modern design and traditional Oaxacan architecture. The hotel features comfortable and stylish rooms, a large shared outdoor seating area surrounded by cacti and a coy pond, it even has a small coffee shop on site.

Casa Rosamate

Los Amantes Hotel, on the other hand, is a charming boutique hotel located in the historic center of Oaxaca. The hotel is housed in a restored colonial mansion and features stylish rooms and suites decorated with local artwork and textiles. The hotel also has a beautiful courtyard with a fountain and a restaurant serving delicious Oaxacan cuisine. Both hotels offer a luxurious and comfortable stay in the heart of Oaxaca, and they are ideal for travelers looking for a unique and authentic experience.

Where to Eat & Drink

Oaxaca is a culinary paradise, and there are many fantastic restaurants and bars to choose from, we basically ate and drank our way around the city, so we know! One must-try restaurant is Boulenc, which is famous for its artisanal bread, pastries, and coffee. This place has a tropical and inviting atmosphere, and it’s a great place to start your day with a delicious breakfast. We loved it so much we went back a second time for dinner. Another must-visit spot is La Popular, an artsy restaurant known for its authentic Oaxacan cuisine. The restaurant is prefect for late night eats like tacos or tlayudas, and mezcal cocktails. If you’re looking for a more modern take on Oaxacan cuisine, Gozobi is an excellent choice. The restaurant features a fusion of Oaxacan and Mediterranean flavors, and the menu changes daily based on what’s in season. They also have a great view of the city from the rooftop – it’s a must see!

For a more casual dining experience, Casa Alejandra is a perfect choice. The bed and breakfast serves traditional Mexican cuisine, and the dishes are affordable and delicious. If you’re looking for a trendy spot, Muss Café is the only choice. The café is known for its great coffee, delicious food, and friendly staff. They are located inside Casa Antonieta which has the most dreamy open ceiling view I’ve ever seen! These restaurants and bars are just a few of the many fantastic places to eat and drink in Oaxaca, and they offer a great taste of the local cuisine and culture.

What To Do

One of the must-do activities is shopping at the Mercado 20 de Noviembre. The market is a bustling hub of activity, and it’s a great place to find authentic Oaxacan crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. Walk around at get lost in the city gazing at beautiful architecture and the hustle and bustle of the city. Another great place to visit is the Jardín Etnobotánico, which is a botanical garden that showcases the region’s rich biodiversity. The garden is home to many indigenous plant species and offers visitors a chance to learn about the traditional uses of these plants in Oaxacan culture. Finally, no trip to Oaxaca is complete without a mezcal tasting. Mezcal is the region’s signature spirit, and there are many distilleries and tasting rooms in and around the city where you can sample the different varieties.

Instagram-Worthy Photo Locations

Oaxaca city is full of colorful and vibrant spots that are perfect for capturing the perfect Insta-worthy photo. One of the best spots for a picture is A.M. Siempre Café, where you can snap a photo under the famous “Oaxaca Te Amo” sign. Another great spot is La Toscana, with its beautiful pink wall mural outside the restaurant. If you’re looking for a more peaceful setting, head to Templo de Santo Domino de Guzman, where you can capture the perfect shot without any tourists in the frame by heading to the left of the church. Lastly, the Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca is a must-visit for nature lovers and photo enthusiasts, with its lush gardens and stunning scenery providing the perfect backdrop for your Instagram feed.

2021 Reflections > 2022 My Word of The Year

2021 Reflections – Things I learned about myself this year

  • I STILL love cozy outfits. I’ve been working from home since covid and I’ve realized lounge sets are the new power suits. My count of matching sets is up from 15 last year to 25+ this year.
  • I’m finally back at the gym after taking a long hiatus mostly due to covid and have learned I get my best workouts in during lunch time. I realized I’m too exhausted (and comfy) at the end of the workday to want to leave my house and workout. And if you know me at all, we know I am NOT a morning person so working out first thing is disastrous. Getting a workout in when I have the most energy and fuel really helped me see a significant difference in my strength and endurance.
  • I STILL really love coffee. More and more with each sip! I officially have a favorite or go to coffee drink – a lavender latte. I love coffee so much it’s inspired me to write two coffee blog series next year. 1. Insta-Worthy Coffee Shops in SD which I’ve sorta started on Reels and TikTok. Sometimes these coffee shops are so cute and aesthetically pleasing but they miss the mark on food and drinks. 2. My Favorite Coffee Shops in San Diego focusing on my recommendations on what drinks and food to order when you visit. This series will be less focused on décor and ambiance and more about quality and taste.
  • I have a hard time making BIG decisions. I stress myself out with the potential outcomes of my decision before I even make a decision. Something, I definitely I need to work on next year. My advice to myself is to trust my gut even if my heart doesn’t agree.
  • I miss traveling, a lot! I did have a few trips in the books this year, I visited Tulum, Washington/Oregon, and Nashville. But I miss international travel. Something about an exotic trip with new food, friends and memories has me longing for a 10+ hour flight to anywhere. But, I’ll likely focus on domestic travel again this year. In fact I already have some weekend trips booked early in 2022. Including a few bucket lists places. Stay tuned!!!
  • I have little to no patience. Some would argue I have zero patience. Which leads me into 2022 My Word of The Year.

2022 – My Word of The Year

Similar to last year, I’m skipping the new year resolutions and I am continuing to focus on one word to live by and really hold myself accountable to the goals I’ve set.

After thinking about what I wanted for my life and future I chose the word patience. The exact definition is “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset”.

My goals for actively choosing to live by and learning to have patience are:

  • Make better decisions
  • Enjoy more happiness and feel better i.e. less anxious, angry, annoyed, stressed
  • Lessen the need for instant gratification
  • Reclaim my time and priorities
  • Respond to life with a grounded sense of who I am
  • Improve my physical and mental health
  • Become a better listener i.e. a better daughter, friend, coworker, partner

A special person in my life has subtlety reminded me the lack of patience I have. As I was doing research for a word to live by this year, the word patience jumped out at me. I quickly realized patience to some may appear to be as simple as having patience over daily hassles like a long line at Trader Joe’s, San Diego traffic or slow internet connection.

Next year I’d like to handle daily hassles with more grace and patience but really look at these scenarios through a different lens to help me be more satisfied with life and the little moments I may have missed.

This year I’ve realized I’m an awful listener. I tend to assume the endings to stories people are sharing, or cut them off to immediately tell them my thoughts before they’ve even finished their sentence. I’d like to learn to listen, digest and reflect while others are speaking before I share my two cents. I’d love to strengthen relationships both professional and personal by shifting my mindset and applying the art of patience.

I’ve been patiently waiting for God’s timing to harmoniously fit motherhood into my life. I’ve come to the realization it may never happen. I think having patience and waiting out my life’s hardship will lead me to hope and happiness on my journey.

I’ve shared a few scenarios in my life where the art of patience can tremendously benefit me. Now it’s time to put in the work and hopefully reap the benefits. Creating inner peace and deepening my relationships are the core of my word for 2022. I’m excited to see the change in my life based on the word I am choosing to live by.

This adorable mural is located along the wall of Finnleys boutique just near some parking spaces. You don’t need to enter the store to take a picture here, but, if you’re in the neighborhood you may as well stop in and treat yo self.

What Lifts You Wings
Address: 302 11th Ave South, Nashville, TN 37203

This is a must visit mural while in Nashville. These wings are massive and so impressive, they are sure to spice up your Insta feed. Fair warning there may be a line to take a picture, on the plus side, if you are traveling solo there will likely be someone who offers to snap that perfect IG photo for you.

Kittenish
Address: 304 11th Ave South, Nashville, TN 37203

Likely one of my favorite boutiques in Nashville. Jessie James Decker has impeccable taste. The boutique items are fun and flirty and the interior décor screams Insta-worthy! Here you can get TWO Insta-worthy photo ops. One at the balloon mural and the newly added floral wall + neon sign combo which is so stinking cute!

Midtown

The Graduate Hotel + White Limozeen
Address: 101 20th Ave North, Nashville, TN 37203

The Graduate Hotel is a bloggers dream come true. Every inch of this hotel is IG worthy. They decor is stunning! Here you can find auditorium seating made up of geoprint couches with pop culture wall paper behind. There is also an magical outdoor eating space, and a chic coffee shop. Any one of these backdrops are a perfect photo location spot.

Now let’s talk about White Limozeen… this rooftop bar and restaurant with a pool view located on the the top floor of the Graduate hotel. Dolly Parton really has outdone herself yet again. This is by far the #1 place to visit for Insta-Worthy photos. You can have your pick from the rooftop city view where there is a large sculpture of Queen Dolly herself, as well as the cutest pink umbrellas overlooking the city. Or you can snap a few pictures inside the pink themed bar/restaurant. The round couch is a MUST for photos! I mean… come on!

Amelia’s Flower Truck
Address: There are a few mobile trucks that move around the city but can often be found in the Gulch or Midtown.

By far the cutest flower situation I’ve ever seen. There are three flower trucks all over the city, definitely be sure to track one down for the most gorgeous photos. I just so happened to find this beaut outside the Graduate hotel in Midtown Nashville and another in The Gulch.

Hillsboro Village

While in Hillsboro Village you can find this adorable lips mural along the side of United Apparel Liquidations. You don’t need to enter the store to snap a picture here but if you’re in the neighborhood be sure to stop in to shop Men and Women’s clothing and accessories. I’d also highly recommend crossing the street for a burger at Double Dogs, literally still thinking about this burger. It was so good!

Dream Hotel

The Dream On mirror just next to the lobby inside the Dream Hotel is a must see while in Nashville and you can pop into Stateside Kitchen for some brunch action and live music.

Pedestrian Bridge

If you park on the east side of the river you can find easy and free street parking from 6am – 11pm and you’re just a short walk to the bridge. Here you’ll have one of the best views of downtown Nashville. It’s the perfect place to catch the sunset and get the best city view!

Musician’s Hall of Fame

Ok, I was the MOST excited to visit this location. How stinking cute are these oversized ticket stubs?! They make the perfect backdrop for this music city! What I loved about this Insta-worthy place is there wasn’t a line or crowds and it was easy to find street parking nearby.

This was definitely a favorite Instagrammable place in Nashville. There is a wall of pink and white roses with a sign that reads Hey there Nashville! It’s at the entrance to a popular brunch spot the Hampton Social Club. Honestly, these pictures don’t do it justice. It’s so dreamy in person!

Reese Witherspoon definitely hit the mark with the wall alongside her store Draper James. It’s got a preppy flare and is so pretty, the wall art + shop definitely match her aesthetic.

This mural is across the alley way from Draper James. You can kill two birds with one stone by stopping here. And look at this picture. It screams tell me you went to Nashville, without telling me you went to Nashville.

The I love Donuts wall art is so stinking cute! You’ll get a sweet treat & a great photo op all under one roof. PS These are the best cronuts I’ve EVER had. I still drool thinking about them.

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans? I know I do. My featured item on HTWTW are these high waisted skinny jeans from Express that hug you in all the right places. Today I’m showing you how to make some simple swaps to your outfit to elevate your jeans from day to night. Which is your favorite? Daytime chic or nighttime glam?

How To Style Jeans From Day to Night
Look No. 1

Pull out your favorite pair of jeans, you know the ones that are ultra comfortable and make you feel like a boss babe. Now to keep things daytime chic pair them with a basic bodysuit. Bodysuits are so effortless, versatile and are perfect for layering. I’ve been purchasing them in neutral colors to add to my wardrobe to wear them all year long.

Now that you have the basics of your outfit ready let’s add in shoes and accessories to spice up your outfit. Gold jewelry is classic and really elevates any outfit. You can layer in necklaces, earrings, and rings to add depth and a playful touch to your look. Let’s add in a pair of statement sandals. I love this pair, they are neural but have bold jewels that really pop. I also added a pair of my favorite sunglasses to balance out my accessories.

Lastly, find a neutral crossbody bag and you’re set! You can wear this stylish yet effortless look to coffee, a casual date, or to run errands. Whatever comes up, you’re styled and ready to conquer the day!

Look No. 2

I’m taking these skinny jeans from day to night by making a few swaps for an entirely new look. You can wear these jeans from running errands during the day to date night with your significant other or a girls night out.

I wanted to keep the color pallet of this look neutral so you can wear it during any season. My advice is to really think of the versatility of pieces when purchasing new items for your wardrobe. How often will you wear that neon bodysuit over a neutral one? I highly suggest investing in a neutral color pallet and layerable pieces. This will ensure you can wear these new pieces all year long and they will never go out of style.

The first piece of this outfit we’re going to swap from our daytime look is that basic bodysuit. Let’s add in a chic top to give us a classic elegant feel. I love love love this black sweater top! The fit and quality is a 10/10, and the cutout detail on the front gives us just a hint of sexy. Which is the perfect balance for a nighttime look!

Next you’ll want to swap your statement sandals for a pair of heels. I went with a clear and neutral color. However, you could always wear black pair heels you already own or if you’re bold throw in a heel with a pop of color. Now let’s swap out that gold necklace for statement gold earrings to really draw attention to your face. Next layer in a bracelet and some rings to add a playful touch. Lastly, swap out that neutral crossbody bag for a chic clutch to really elevate this look from day to night. I pulled my hair up to really show off my neckline which I think adds a touch of sexy to this look.

Now go and enjoy a glass of wine (or two) with the girls or with dinner because looking this good you deserve it!

Welcome to the Ultimate Reno Travel Guide! Let me start off by saying I used to live in Reno, I love it and I miss it dearly! My best friend thinks I’m crazy (he grew up there), but the truth is Reno is rad! Since I’ve moved from Reno (about 5 years ago) the place has boomed with new housing developments, hip and trendy restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, and art installations. Reno is slowly becoming a more popular travel destination and for good reason. There is so much to do and explore and it really is The Biggest Little City in the World.

In this post I’m going to round up the best places to eat, drink, shop, things to do and of course those Insta-Worthy photo locations.

The Ultimate Reno Travel Guide
Neighborhoods of Reno
  • Midtown – This is the most happening area in town. There is a main drag on South Virginia street with countless bars, coffee shops, and restaurants to choose from. You can spend most of your time in this neighborhood, it continues to grow and I am happy to report businesses are thriving here.
  • Downtown – Here you can find casinos, nightlife, the ballpark, amazing views of the Truckee river and some dinning and shopping options. I spent less time in downtown Reno this trip because there’s a influx of homeless people living in parks and public spaces. To be completely transparent I didn’t feel as safe in this neighborhood as I had just 5 years ago. However, there are still some gems worth visiting so don’t completely skip the area when visiting. You can’t miss the infamous Reno sign when in town!
  • South Reno – There are a few cool spots in South Reno, but this area is more family friendly and lowkey. It’s only a 30-40 minute drive to North Tahoe and has tons of hiking trails along the way.
Where to Stay in Reno

Below you’ll find my top five places to stay in Reno. These recommendations range with items I find important when traveling to a new city. They either have access to the city and surrounding neighborhoods or they offer great amenities on site.

$$ – Boujee on a budget recommendations

  • The Jesse – A newly renovated boutique hotel in downtown. This hotel used to be the Lincoln Lounge back in my day but the renovations are stunning! Rooms are modern and cozy and you have some great restaurants nearby including one on site.
  • Airbnb near Downtown – Being in close proximity to downtown is great. You’re close to the river and have great views of the city and you’re in walking distance to casinos, shops & restaurants.
  • Airbnb in Midtown – Newly renovated apartment with hip and trendy décor and a shared outdoor space. Great location in the heart of Midtown.
  • Grand Sierra Resort – One of the nicest hotels in town (in my opinion) with tons of amenities on site like a bowling alley, driving range, shopping, pool, restaurants, and nightlight all under one roof. This resort is located in the heart of Reno with close proximity to the airport.
  • Whitney Peak Hotel – Located just a few blocks from the Truckee River and amazing views of the infamous Reno sign. This property is the in heart of downtown; they have a outdoor rock climbing and a concert hall on site! Bonus they are pet friendly.
Insta-Worthy Photo Spots

With Love From Reno at Helianthus Floral Design

This adorable shop has the cutest ‘With Love From Reno’ mural located next to the entrance. I especially love the soft colors, florals and calligraphy. This location really makes the cutest photo backdrop sure to brighten up your feed.

⭐TIP – I’d recommend visiting early morning or just before sunset for optimal lighting.

I’m starting to see a theme here 😛 Clearly the With Love from Reno saying is a thing and here is just another take on street art in town.

⭐TIP – This mural is located on north side of the building next to some parking spaces. I suggest visiting just before sunset the lighting was 10/10 and there wasn’t a soul in sight.

This art mural is located at Premier Window Tinting along the west wall of the shop and it is massive! Full disclosure this business is located on the industrial side of town so there isn’t much to see or do nearby but there is plenty of parking and it’s so easy to stop in and take a few pictures.

⭐TIP – If you visit during business hours you’ll likely need to tell the crew you are just there taking pictures. I’m sure they get ALL the time!

The most infamous sign in Reno! You can’t visit this city and not stop in for a picture under the Reno Arch or more famously known as The Biggest Little City In The World sign. Did you even visit Reno without a picture here? 

⭐TIP – The best photo op is on the North East side of Virginia Street & E Commercial Row. Here you’ll find some poker chips that you can sit or stand on to make your picture pop!

Things To Do In Reno

Seriously the cutest shop in Reno! I had the best shopping experience; the staff was so friendly and helpful. Be sure to stop in for gifts, home décor, or to create your own floral bouquet. They even host workshops and will help with floral arrangements for any special occasion.

⭐TIP – If you are as obsessed with the With Love From Reno saying as much as I am, you can find items like stickers and magnets from Pretty Little Paper Co at this shop.

Late Night Pool Party
📍 2500 E 2nd St, Reno, NV 89595

Head to a night a Late Night Swim at the Grand Sierra Resort pool. You can catch a DJ and late night drinks every weekend during the summer months from 10pm – 2am. Admission is $20 per person.

⭐TIP – Don’t forget to dress in your best swim attire.

Food Truck Friday’s
📍 1800 Idlewild Drive, Idlewild Park Reno, NV 89509

During the summer months you can head to Idlewild park and catch over 30 gourmet food, dessert, craft beer and wine vendors from 4-9pm. I always have so much fun tasting Reno’s eats and taking in the beautiful summer weather. You can pack some chairs or a blanket and have a picnic with friends and family. Most tourists never hear about this event so be sure to check it out if you visit!

Shop Nomad Boutique
📍 736 S Virginia Street Reno, NV 89501

Honestly the most trendy boutique in Reno, located in the heart of Midtown. The store has the cutest clothes, shoes and accessories at affordable prices. The staff was unpleasant BUT that didn’t stop me from stopping in and making a purchase. I walked out with some great pieces; I’ll definitely stop in again on my next visit or even opt to shop online.

Day or Weekend Trip to Lake Tahoe
  • STAY at the hip & trendy Basecamp Hotel. This newly renovated hotel is in a prime location just walking distance to shopping, casinos, and restaurants. This hotel is affordable and has tons of amenities on site like a rooftop fire pit, beer garden, picnic deck and a coffee shop and restaurant on site.
  • EAT lunch or dinner at California Burger Co. with live music in the courtyard as you dine. I’d recommend ordering the Chicken Club it was seriously perfection! I’m still drooling over it.
  • HIKE to Monkey Rock for amazing views of the lake and of course the rock that is suspiciously carved to resemble a monkey. This trail is short but it will kick your butt with an elevation gain of ~500 in under 2.5 miles.
  • DRINK delicious wine on a sunset tasting cruise on Lake Tahoe with Tahoe Tastings. You’ll get 5 tastings, a 2 hour cruise on The Golden Rose and the cost is $85/per person. The views and experience are unmatched… worth it!
  • VISIT Roundhill Pine Beach Resort a family friendly beach resort. You can rent a SUP for some fun in the fun or an umbrella and lounge chairs to have a relaxing day at the beach with the lake as your backdrop. Also, this location has a bar on the beach and a small snack shack with some good eats. Hum yes, please!

⭐TIP – There are tons of hiking trails in Tahoe if that’s more your style or if you need more of a city feel head to South Tahoe for large hotels, casinos and nightlife.

Anna’s Taqueria
📍 271 Wonder Street Reno, NV 89502

Ok… seriously the best street tacos in Reno by far! I lived in a border town most of my life and often crossed the border just to have street tacos and these compare to the best of the best. Trust me when I say food and drinks are a 10/10. Not only is this new spot hip, trendy, and delicious but the owners were so sweet! You cannot visit Reno without stopping in.

⭐ TIP – This gem is located across the street from Helianthus Floral.

Estella
📍 350 Evans Ave Reno, NV 89509

I came here for brunch on a Saturday and it was happening ya’ll. The outside space is perfect for big groups. They have large picnic style tables with umbrella’s for shade, a few booths under some large trees, and strung lights for ambiance. We did have to order our drinks and food inside the lobby of the Jesse Hotel which was kind of a bust. My only complaint, if you want to call it that, is I wish they had servers to wait on you. However, the food & drinks were delicious so I’d definitely be back next time I visit.

You’ll come for the tacos (or tostadas) and stay for the tequila, drinks and ambience. Their food menu is limited, but I love that they stick to what they know and crush it. I had a carne asada tostada (featured below) and it was life changing, I’d highly recommend trying it if you stop in. You’ll love pairing the food with their many margaritas and tequila cocktails, yum!

Yogurt Beach
📍 5 locations in Reno/Sparks

A hometown favorite yogurt shop! I love the (surfer/beach) theme and honestly the freshest yogurt and ingredients. Stop by for a sweet treat after dinner or bring the kiddos!

The Eddy
📍 16 S Sierra Street Reno, NV 89501

A community space in downtown located along the Riverwalk. You can grab drinks (beer, wine or cocktails), play yard games, experience local art or even take in a fitness class! And they are dog friendly!

The Emerson
📍 955 S Virginia Street Reno, NV 89509

A new chic cocktail lounge in the heart of Midtown. They serve craft cocktails and offer a comedy show on Monday’s or a drag Bingo the 2nd Thursday of the month.

Sugar Rum Lime

A new hip & trendy cocktail lounge perfect for date night or a girls night out! The space is stunning and who doesn’t love a craft cocktail?!

Perenn Bakery
📍 20 St Lawrence Ave Reno, NV 89509

A modern bakery and café that I fell in love with. The décor and vibe was classic yet boho chic, this place makes a perfect coffee date destination with a girlfriend. You can even treat yourself to one of the many pastries and a delicious cup of coffee. I’d highly recommend stopping in on your next Reno trip.
